Turf Pests

All Island Landscape uses IPM (integrated pest management), a program that entails the use of common sense and good cultural practices in the maintenance of turf. We do this by the following guidelines established by The University of Rhode Island turf grass program:

  1. Identification of the source of any “problems”.
  2. Knowledge of the life cycle of the problematic insect, disease or weed.
  3. Determination of the tolerance level for a given pest (i.e., how many is too many? How much damage is acceptable?).
  4. Regular checks of the property to determine pest populations and whether the tolerances are being exceeded.
  5. Determination of whether pest control is necessary.
  6. Identification and implementation of cultural techniques to manage the pest or problem to the extent necessary.
  7. Selection of pesticides which will minimize disruption to the environment and potential exposures to applicators and others.
  8. Communication of findings, intentions, and actions to all parties involved.
  9. Evaluation of action; did we solve or reduce the problem to acceptable tolerances.

The following are some of the most common lawn insects found in Rhode Island and all can be effectively controlled by our lawn technicians. (click their name to see a photo of the insect)

All Island Landscape has a working relationship with The University of Rhode Island’s turf professors to identify environmentally sound procedures to control these sometimes devastating lawn pests. It is our policy to not indiscriminately distribute pesticides to a lawn without identifying first the host insect(s) and the damage or potential for damage to your lawn. If you have questions about this part of our five-step program please feel free to contact us at (401) 683-1588 or send an e-mail to ericl@allislandlandscape.com
